Tools You Need for Retail Interior Design

Carter Hartong

Interior design for retail spaces is ever-evolving and constantly requires fresh approaches and innovation. Your ability to produce high-quality designs is crucial, as are workflows that emphasize your speed, creativity, and adaptability.

From existing building survey to final construction, Vectorworks Architect gives you the tools to enhance the customer experience and encourage business growth.

Current Retail Design Workflow Challenges

Retail design workflows are multifaceted and often involve everything from gathering existing building surveys to developing initial sketches, inspiration boards, and detailed design documents for presentations and construction.

Key documents in these processes typically include general arrangements (GAs) and space planning, flooring plans, reflected ceiling plans (RCPs), power and data plans, elevations, detailing sheets, and 3D visualizations.

Many retail designers rely on multiple programs for different design tasks, which can lead to compatibility issues and a fragmented workflow.

Switching between platforms increases project complexity and the potential for errors, as updates don’t automatically transfer across documents. Another challenge is maintaining consistent graphics standards. Without a cohesive system for graphics and branding, your designs can suffer from inconsistencies in look and feel, potentially diminishing the impact of your brand's visual identity.

Vectorworks — An All-In-One Solution for Retail Design

Luckily, Vectorworks offers you a unique solution by integrating 2D, 3D, rendering, and data tools in one design software.

Vectorworks eliminates switching between different software tools, enabling automatic updates across plans, elevations, visuals, and reports. These capabilities provide you with the accuracy you need to save valuable time.

Building a Strong Brand

Establishing a brand guideline and template library is essential for consistent and efficient design across retail projects.

A branding template within Vectorworks includes pre-set color palettes created using the Attributes palette to enter brand-specific color codes that ensure all visuals align with the brand’s aesthetics.

Text styles are maintained consistently by creating new text styles in the Resource Manager, standardizing font use across project documents.

A structured approach to organizing project layers, classes, and sheets in the Organization palette also improves team collaboration and makes it easier to locate and manage assets.

Lastly, custom record formats in the Resource Manager help you track essential data, minimizing errors across projects.

Managing Data

Speaking of data, Vectorworks Architect supports data-driven decision-making by capturing key project data through record formats and IFC data. This process enables designers to integrate with existing databases, minimizing repetitive work.

Linking Vectorworks symbols to external databases like an ODBC system further enhances data consistency and transparency across projects, helping ensure the design aligns with both aesthetic and business goals.

Enhancing Customer Experience

A 2D and 3D hybrid design model allows you to explore and refine aspects of the retail environment before implementation. Adjusting based on customer experience insights allows teams to optimize circulation flow for easy navigation, strategically position product displays and service areas, and enhance lighting through a mix of ambient, task, and natural lighting to create an inviting atmosphere.

Walkthrough animations can also provide valuable insights, offering a realistic preview of the in-store experience.

River Island’s solution to creating exciting in-person shopping experiences comes in the form of new River Studios concept stores.

One of the most interesting aspects of the new stores, according to a blog from the brand, are smart fitting rooms and in-store self-checkout. With carefully placed touch screens, customers can get different styles or assistance from in-store stylists. Then, once a shopper has found what they want, they can check out easier than ever before.

Additionally, there’s the exciting innovation of “Chloe,” an AI styling system that’s currently available in limited stores. With Chloe, clothing found in River Studios will feature RFID tags for identification and intelligent tracking. These tags register through the mounted touch screens throughout the retail space and changing rooms, helping shoppers find more of what they love.

Simply put, the Chloe AI system creates a faster way for customers to find the exact pieces of clothing they’re looking for.

This technology, blended with the advantages of in-person shopping — being able to try on clothes, seeing fabrics in person, and participating in a curated space — will create a new feel for the brand’s retail locations.

Implementing innovative features like this one is bound to enhance customer experience, which in turn can help make your retail project more successful.
